January 11, 2005 CIR UPDATE: Juan Gone Part 2 The Indians officially announced the signing of Juan Gonzalez to a minor league contract today. No word on whether entourages are permitted on a minor league deal. January 07, 2005 CIR UPDATE: Millwood signs with Tribe The Indians have scheduled a press conference for Saturday morning to announce the signing of Kevin Millwood to a one year contract. ESPN.com is reporting that Millwood will be paid a base salary of $3 million along with a $4 million signing bonus which is contingent on the right-hander not spending more than 20 days on the disabled list for a shoulder or elbow injury sustained while pitching. Note the "while pitching" part as ESPN notes "not while fielding or batting". Scott Boras covers everything, doesn't he? The injury protection works as follows (direct from ESPN.com)..."If Millwood spends 21 or more days on the DL for an injury to his shoulder or elbow sustained while pitching, he would lose 1/183rd of the signing bonus for each day on the DL, including the first 20. That reduction calculates to $21,857 per day." When you think of signing bonuses, you typically think they are paid up front but the way this deal is apparantly structured, I would think the Indians would be making an end-of-season signing bonus payment as I can't see Millwood refunding the Indians money if he's hurt during the season. He can also earn an additional $1 million in incentives if he makes up to 34 starts or throws 215 innings. Per a report from WTAM, tomorrow's press conference announcing the signing is scheduled for noon. January 04, 2005 CIR UPDATE: Wait 'til next year for former Indians No former Indians were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this year as Wade Boggs (91.9%) and Ryne Sandberg (76.2%) were the only two candidates to receive more than 75% of the vote and an invitation to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Bert Blyleven (40.9%), Jack Morris (33.3%), and Tommy John (23.8%) will remain on the ballot for another year (well, maybe not TJ, he has to be close to the 15-year limit) while Jack McDowell (4 votes, 0.8%), Tom Candiotti (2, 0.4%), Mark Langston (0, 0.0%), and Otis Nixon (0, 0.0%) did not receive the necessary 5% of votes and, therefore, will not appear on the ballot again. I can't believe Otis did not get a single vote. I can't believe he was even on the ballot. Oh well, there's always the veterans committee ;-). CIR UPDATE: 2005 HOF Class Announced Today The 2005 Hall of Fame class will be announced this afternoon at 2:00 PM ET and you can listen to the proceedings live on MLB Radio. Among the former Indians in this years candidate ranks include Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris, Tommy John and first-time candidates Tom Candiotti, Mark Langston, Black Jack McDowell, and Otis "My Man" Nixon. Wade Boggs is the top newcomer to the ballot with holdovers Ryen Sandberg (61.1% in '04), Bruce Sutter (59.5%), Jim Rice (54.6%), and Andre Dawson (50%) expected to move closer to induction. If I had a ballot, it would consist of Boggs, Sandberg, Sutter, Goose Gossage, and Jack Morris. Just missing the cut would be Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson, Alan Trammell, Jim Rice, and, of course, Otis Nixon. |
